The world’s population is gradually urbanizing, and “Arrival Cities” is a term coined by Doug Saunders (2010) in his book of the same name, which describes the communities of new urban arrivals. While in some lesser developed nations, these “arrival cities” may include slums or favelas on the outskirts of booming urban centers, in more developed nations they may include poor neighborhoods, ethnic communities (e.g. Chinatown), or tower blocks of apartments on the outskirts of cities. Regardless of their form and label, these communities serve as the context of arrival for migrants and immigrants, and successful arrival and social mobility is facilitated within these communities. Arrival communities are not static populations, rather they serve as a rung on the ladder towards social and economic mobility and success. For more information about the arrival city concept, please see the videos of Doug Saunders discussing his book at the end of this page.
As one focal area in my research program, I am interested in exploring the health & social demography of members of arrival communities in Canada, to identify possible policy inputs to facilitate successful arrival and overall well-being. Immigration is the single biggest contributor to Canada’s population growth, with the proportion of foreign-born Canadians expected to reach at least 25% by 2031 (Ng, 2011; Statistics Canada, 2010). Therefore, examining the social demography of immigrant communities, to inform better public and health policy, has the potential to make a significant contribution to the well-being of society.
